Welcome to Elephant Room - An Independent Media Project to Make China Relatable.

In 2017, two Chinese females, Biyi and Yan, freshly in their mid-20s, returned to their homeland, China, after years of studying in the U.K. and U.S. Fascinated by the country's rapid development yet also deeply confused by many aspects of it, they decided to start a blog, which later became a newsletter, to write about, well, China.

Eight years have passed. The two females, Biyi and Yan, have gone through many changes in their lives. But these changes were minimal in comparison to what has changed in our world: a great pandemic, the advent of AI, the collapse of globalization, and much more.

During this turbulent time, Elephant Room went on and off for several years until 2025. After completing a master’s degree in Journalism in Hong Kong, Biyi gathered some of her classmates, who are now aspiring young journalists at many of the top media outlets globally, to join Elephant Room. What united us are two things: we are all curiously open-minded and passionate about telling real people’s stories, and we are Chinese, constantly reflecting on our identity while deeply loving the land and the people to whom we are connected with.

So, Elephant Room continues. As always, Elephant Room aims to be the “third space” in the English media world about China—a space that is small but cozy, and more importantly, genuine.
